CH having health issues?

June 17, 2010

At reddit.com there are comments on Hitchens having breathing issues at the airport. This would explain the cancellations. Hopefully it's nothing serious and more details would be available soon.

He's not 20 anymore and he has been giving interviews and traveled like crazy lately.

I have no idea who arranged the book tour schedule, but when I saw it online at twelve, my first thought was "they're trying to kill him..." He's already been going full throttle for a month.

It's not up to me to tell him how to behave but I would personally in his case try to lose some weight, lose much of the booze and not take up smoking again.

I hope he is well. We need him.

I was there at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge MA waiting for his June 16 appearance when the theatre manager told us the event was cancelled due to 'unforseen circumstances'. I hope Christopher is okay!

Probably just allergies. For the past week I have, off and on, been having asthma attacks. And I'm just like Christopher Hitchens. I smoke and drink and stuff. I'm just less intelligent and have never published anything. And no one knows my name. And I'm Canadian.

Anonymous said...

Odd thing is the same thing happened to me last week- i thought I was having a heart attack, as I couldn't breath, but nowseem to be okay. I think Christopher quit smoking a few years back- He might need to take up exercise...

Anonymous said...

I think he mentioned in a recent interview that he has started to smoke again.

Personally to calm my nerves down a bit I meditate 1 hour 3-4 times a week...I don't consider it spiritual or anything..

Anonymous said...

I heard in an interview recently where he said that he had begun smoking again.

Anonymous said...

Good to know we followers of Hitchopher are also flabby booze hounds. AT LAST I HAVE FOUND MY COMMUNITY!

Anonymous said...

I'm a flabby booze hound, and a huge Hitchens fan. I was sad he couldn't make his scheduled gig in Cambridge MA at the Brattle Theatre, but hope he takes some time off to relax. I was hoping to ask his opinion of the latest treasonous actions by his enemy George Galloway.

Anonymous said...

God is punishing him to stop him from spreading his atheistic religion, Hitchinism! Revel ye' all before the almighty! Satan has seduced him with the vices of drink and intelligence! :P

Anonymous said...

I dont see why his book schedule would hurt him too much. Its not like Hitchens prepares for these things. Traveling can be a nuisance but could it make him ill?

As for smoking, even after he quit he gave a funny answer where he listed all the positives of smoking and concluded with " come to think of it, why did i quit the fucking thing"

Hitchens has probably reached the level where abstaining from smoking and drinking would be more likely to make him ill than continuing with it ( like Billy Bones in treasure island).

Christopher Hitchens is one of an elite few who do a lot of good in the world, eg visiting places like Iran, Congo to try to help those who fight evil and playing a big part in trying to alert the world to the horrors of North Korea as well as speaking out against religion. I really hope he has many years left in him (and doesnt turn mad like Gore vidal)

Mike said...

When I attended his debate with Rabbi David Wolpe in Boston a couple of months ago, I arrived early and, to my surprise, standing outside the front door was Hitchens. He had a cigarette in one hand and a drink (presumably scotch) in the other. I remember worrying for his health then. I hope he's alright.

Anonymous said...

What CH does may appear "effortless", but it certainly is not. His schedule would exhaust most men half his age in a matter of days. Not to mention, in the last month, he's clocked more air miles than most flight crews. And don't forget the dozens of interviews and media appearances. And he's still writing his columns. It's too fucking much.

I hope Twelve will delay the tour and let him get some much needed rest. And the ciggies have got to go. They are not worth his life. If he can quit them for a year, he can throw them away for good.

Anonymous said...

I live in Boston, so am absolutely kicking myself for having missed his recfent appearance in Boston, debating Rabbi David Wolpe.
Is Christopher friendly in person?
I really hope he's okay...Has he been hospitalized?
Is there any way to send a get well note?

Mike said...

TitanicExplorer,
Yes, he was quite friendly. We talked for several minutes and he graciously signed several books. I too went to the Brattle Theatre only to learn that the event had been canceled on 45 minutes' notice. I haven't heard anything about his situation beyond what I've read here.

Philipa said...

I found him utterly charming in person.

Elize said...

He "was" quiet friendly and "found" him charming? Did Hitchens die?

Anonymous said...

No...they are referring to a meeting that happened in the past, therefore, at that meeting Hitchens "was" quite friendly.

It'd be in the news if he died, and a quick google search shows no news stories as such.

As for the smoking, the most recent interview in the news with him that comes up in the aforementioned google search has him holding a "marlboro light" when the interviewer arrives.

Seems he's switched brands from Rothmans Blue to Marlboros, but, I digress.

FGFM said...

Anyone think that he'll make it to Portland on Wednesday? #hitchdeathwatch

Anonymous said...

Phillipa! FGFM! Hitchens Watch!CH's kook stalkers!!!! I must say, you guys are good for a laugh. But why such great concern about the Hitch? I thought you hated him.

The man is blessed by his enemies.

Oh, and DECENTDECENTDECENT!!!!LOL

Mark G said...

"Seems he's switched brands from Rothmans Blue to Marlboros, but, I digress." Noticed that also. An attempt perhaps to smoke a somewhat 'healthier' cig. I like Menthol lights myself. CHW takes an, um, interest in Hitch's health, so you shouldn't be surprised to see us over here. You might say the fate of the site depends on it.

Anonymous said...

That Hitchens Watch website seems to be run by George Galloway apologists; all of whom hate and fear the great Christopher Hitchens. They seemed to make light of the fact he's sick. Very uncool.

One of my favorite phone interviews with Hitch was by Boston's Michael Graham, where Hitchens reacted to news of a Cambridge MA appearance by George Galloway, and detailed why Galloway is such a contemptable person. Few things i enjoy more than seeing/hearing Christopher Hitchens shred George Galloway.

Anonymous said...

Tarn, I think you're right. I think Galloway and his political allies pay for the site. The main poster seems to be some old half-baked Stalinist like Galloway.

I go there from time to time, just because they're entertaining, kind of like watching monkeys at the zoo. You never know what over the top accidently hillarious stuff they're going to post next. The Phillipa Chick has some type of weird fetish for Peter Hitchens, MarkG was a former student of C. Hitchens (and has "issues"), and who knows what psyche ward that FGFM guy is posting from. (If you go there today, FGFM has a "Hitchensdeathwatch" post. Sick fuck.)

FGFM said...

Q&A With Christopher Hitchens

Well, for these people, without running for something, whats life for? It would be like Prince Charles saying he doesn't want to be king after all. It means you've wasted your life. Of course, Gore didn't say he'd never run again, just not this time. Same mistake he made in 1992: I won't run this cycle, because I think Bush will win; Ill stay out and be better positioned for the next election. This is the same tactic Mrs. Clinton is taking. Well, this is despicable. I just hope they all get some sort of wasting disease before they can run.

Anonymous said...

How does one reach Christopher Hitchens? I'd like to send him a get well card or email...

Anonymous said...

WoW. Let's add inability to distinguish Rhetorical from Literal to the FGFM profile. Like I said--a complete nut case. Spew that hate baby! Surely the Hitch would be disappointed to have anything less from a pathetic loser like you.(Actually, if you think anyone gives a crap what you think, you really are delusional.)

Mike said...

Tarn,
You can generally reach an author by sending a letter addressed to him in care of his publisher. Has it been confirmed, though, that he actually was ill?

Tom said...

No news yet but the cancellations indicates that something's going on.
Apparently Seattle June 22 is still on.

Anonymous said...

Didn't he just give a radio interview? Perhaps he was told to get some rest- i suppose no news is good news- I hope he is okay...

Anonymous said...

FGFM might just be the dumbest and most awful person I have encountered on the internet. He thrives on people from the 'other side' (he has "decent" tourettes) going after him, so best just to ignore.

FGFM said...

"I think Galloway and his political allies pay for the site."

Decent has a theory! BTW, you Hitchens experts who are trying to contact him do know that he is listed in the Washington DC phone book, don't you?

Tom said...

FGFM is right, his address has never been a secret. You can look it up at addresses.com: 2022 Columbia Rd, NW, #701, Washington DC 20009. Phone:(202) 387-0246. It's the Wyoming building, if you know your way around D.C. Hitchens recently said that he never replies to mail or email, "I don't want to encourage fans".

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the address Tom, I'll mail off a getwell card. Im sure Hitch is not overly sentimental about things like that, but I want to do it anyway. I'm very surprised for such a public figure his mailing address is known...

Whats to prevent a nut from Hitchens Watch to send him hate mail?

FGFM said...

"Whats [sic] to prevent a nut from Hitchens Watch to send him hate mail?"

Why bother?

Anonymous said...

Yes FGFM, I had a typo, thank you for drawing attention to it.

Can i assume you are not a fan of Mr Hitchens?

FGFM said...

"Can i assume you are not a fan of Mr Hitchens?"

FGFM, shouldn't you be playing with your friends over at Hitchens Watch?

Poldy said...

HitchensWatch is actually a rather anti-Semitic (or anti-anti-anti-Semitic [or ante-anti-Semitic]) and deeply unpleasant place.

The MO seems to be to root around for some -itz or -ein or -man or -berg lurking in the background and then to blame it all on a Zionist conspiracy. The NWO is referenced frequently and without irony over there.

Anonymous said...

Poldy, that almost sounds LaRouchie in tone. They hate Hitchens too. Someone is obviously financing Hitchens Watch, and depends on useful idiots like FGMG to become regulars and keep it going.

To quote Ebert, who rather indirectly nailed the pitiful FGFM with this passing apercu today, "the average venomous poster on a blog is an unmarried man, living alone, socially inept, unhappily employed. It's his escape."

Also, for the curious who would like a little empiricism along with big ol' E's theory, there is our champ's very own YouTube channel revealing in vertiginous, resonating depth exactly what a sad little fucked-up, interminably bemusing case FGFM is (caution: it is rather Buffalo Bill-ish, in both voice and grisly sociopathy):

He's like a foul-mouthed, severely autistic chubby-man in the grips of some indecipherable tantrum without, of course, the residual charm. Kinda fat too.

That being said, one wishes him well in this new Internet 3.0 age. He was born for Twitter, or Twitter was for him. In more civil days past, he would have been limited to hollering at passing couples, or disrupting town hall meetings; now, at least, he can let all that bilious cant really run. And, oh my, what an awful lot of it there is.

Nah, unlike the "Marxist" Hitch ("I only write for money"), our motives are pure: comic fun and, of course, hatred.

"Due to unavoidable circumstances. He hopes to be able to reschedule" and "Hitchens had to attend to a personal matter" are the only statements by his publicist so far. Bloody annoying not knowing, isn't it?

Heywood Jeblome said...

Look at the eamil I got!

Christopher Hitchens' publicist has just informed us that Hitchens must regretfully cancel his appearance at Town Hall Seattle scheduled for Tuesday, 6/22/2010 due to unavoidable circumstances. He hopes to be able to reschedule.

May be he is taking care of a sick relative.

The shitty blog...

Yes, the shitty blog. It's a shitty blog.

Bwaaaaaahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaa!

Tom said...

Yes but then there are the comments on reddit.com about health issues at the airport. One thing would explain the other.

Xenophrenia said...

I'm not sure annoying is the word I would use for - frustrating maybe. It really bothers me to see so many joke about his drinking when I have noticed in several recent videos that he appears not so much drunk as 'not right'. Noticed it when he was on Real Time first - almost appears to be in pain the way he sits. Have felt there is something wrong for awhile and people's attitude regarding a very likely cause upsets me. His drinking isn't necessarily a badge of honor if it's killing him is it?

Okay - I'm done ranting ... just wish we'd hear something - good or bad so this 'not knowing' would go away.

Heywood Jeblome said...

Yes but then there are the comments on reddit.com about health issues at the airport. One thing would explain the other.

Oh yes thats ture. May be he is sick then. His drinking is actually healthy because he said there was an article about red wine being good for choloesterol. I do worry about him smoking again though. There are NO benefits to that. And the less said about his drug-taking the better.

I have noticed in several recent videos that he appears not so much drunk as 'not right'. Noticed it when he was on Real Time first - almost appears to be in pain the way he sits.

It might just be haemmoroids. It's easy to get them at his age and erm...condition. Fortunately no one ever died of a haemmoroid.

I think!

FGFM said...

"His drinking is actually healthy because he said there was an article about red wine being good for choloesterol."

Pity that he's pounding a fifth of scotch a day.

Mark G said...

"Yes, the shitty blog. It's a shitty blog."

Can you read, pal? I wrote, "the shitty blogspot address" referring, of course, to the outdated, primitive, free website service known as Blogger or Blogspot. This might be the first time I've ever seen anyone actually cut a word in half in order to distort the meaning of someone else's words. Congrats, Sir!

Chris is a neocon and Peter is a reactionary, so what's not to hate? We do feel a little pity for Peter given that he's had to suffer his brother longer than the rest of us.

Mark G is more commonly known as Dim. Why Dim? Well, he once wrote a series of limericks, none of which was under a hundred syllables, which sounds harmlessly pathetic, but keep in mind that this active blogger also thought paedophilia consisted of underage children having consensual sex with each other - and was thus (and this was very much his own "thus") largely FOR it. (Presumably he thought the Catholic church's institutionalised child abuse involved very, very young priests, and very, very young nuns).

He's also of the opinion that American society is worse than that of North Korea (cuz o' cop brutality - as I said: Dim).

He is rather extravagantly, needlessly stupid, even for a very stupid person.

FGFM, on the other hand, is a more curious case. He is rather put-out that he had to endure such an ill-bred upbringing of crass underprivilege (his parents were just a bit shit, I guess: he oozes coarseness and resentment) and consequently looks on the Oxonian, nay, Balliolian stylings of Hitchens with a nauseating, conflicted admixture of envy and loathing. He is an angry, angry man, almost constantly online (be warned), and relentlessly unironic (tone-deaf, literal, trés Queensbury). He spends a horrid proportion of his life posting "indeed" or "Decent" and a variety of perplexing acronyms of his own construction on message boards. He speaks almost entirely in pre-cast catchphrases. He is purely semiological, like a lesser-ape - semantically under-developed. I suppose one could sum him up with the sad truth that he is a committed YouTube commenter.

It's occasionally fun to poke and prod him a bit and watch him collapse into his autistic caterwauls of confusion, but don't ever make the mistake of interacting with him on anything other than a detached, anthropological level; he's just another example of the rabid fauna ranging about the Internet.

All in all, the HitchensWatch crowd is an unseemly mix of conspiracy nuts, anarchists, thick-fucks, antisemites, Mexican-haters, and assorted other paranoids. Don't be surprised if they spill over from their site, or from Rense.com or JewWatch or 911Truth or other such simpatico slums, onto here; paranoia, after all, is nothing if not energetic.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Ron..
Oh god, 9/11 truther crackpots gather on Hitchens Watch? That explains everything. The moment someone argues 9/11 was an inside job, they immediately discredit themselves on having credibility on any subject. Leave it to the them to argue that we either brought 9/11 on ourselves or assert that Bush did it...I like how Christopher Hitchens lays the blame where it belongs- with the rabid Islamic fascists.
As an athiest, I abhore all religious cults, but their cult is a particulalry violent one..

I hope Hitch gets well soon, and continues to speak out against the Galloways of the world...

Ron Santo said...

Mark G came by "Dim" honestly. Some enemy poster gave him the nickname. Mark G missed the reference to A Clockwork Orange and vigorously protested that he was far too smart for the nickname. Somebody eventually pointed out the reference to Mark G. He then claimed to have read the novel in the original Russian.

Mark G said...

"Generally, they delete or edit them."

Tom, "Generally" the opposite is true: CHW does not delete or edit comments. CHW NEVER deletes or edits comments that are merely pro-Hitchens.

Over the years, however, there have been cases where certain trolls, like a couple featured on this thread, came on to the site solely to, well, troll: harass and stalk other commenters, engage in personal, threatening attacks and basically try to sabotage the site. These people were not sidelined for writing pro-Hitchens commentary, which is always welcomed at CHW.

A few lost hours on that website of yours revealed that you claim to know Russian and to like PG Wodehouse. Or perhaps I have that backwards. As I stated, I don't follow your "work" closely. I do seem to remember you having a colossal shitfit once upon a time because some Hitchens acolyte banned you from slate.com's or national review's or something like that's website. You howled about the first amendment, free speech, etc. Now you do the banning, huh? Shows them, I guess.

Do let's not forget the farrago of fury and indignation into which Dim whipped himself because he was quite rightly fired from his job for his inability to desist from insulting co-workers in that inimitably discombobulated fashion of his and his general and assorted other incompetences.

Stalinisn, I believe, is to what he likened that understandably exasperated employer of his, before he ultimately stole from them, or maybe that was after; I'm not quite sure of the chronology.

Classy and self-aware crowd, those HWers.

I do dearly hope, Dim, that you didn't try and teach them limericks.

From my limited exposure there you guys specialize, alomst exclusively, in ad hominem attacks against Hitchens. Fair enough since you're obviously aware
that pro-Hitchens types will repay like with like. Just like Hitchens, you can take it as well as you dish it out. Shame on these "anonymous" types for hinting otherwise and accusing you of banning and cruelty to the suffering, etc. "Trolls" is too noble a word for them.

My favourite was when FGFM appealed to The Sage (the antisemite and paranoid truther with whom FGFM proudly stands shoulder to shoulder while wishing ill-fortune and death on a sixty-year old father) in his pre-banning baton days to ban me for calling him, quite appositely, "autistic" and "ill-bred" on the grounds that HW has "house-rules" (i.e No Yids or Mexicans).

I've said it before: I've met corvids with more self-awareness than FGFM.

Christ, no wonder the place is in such straits if they keep employing sub-literates. I imagine that rancid little community college that FGFM spat his way through even had higher standards than that (though evidently lacking the nous to impart them).

But, sure, Mark: from your perspective I can imagine how that would be a source of pride.

Mark G said...

Only an asshole would completely ignore the substance of AUI-S Watch and instead attempt to start a pissing contest over grammar use. But then again, you are an asshole. Do you have anything interesting to say about yourself, your views of Hitchens, the war in Iraq? I don't know, anything, aside from trying to insult other unknown Internet people?

There seems to be some hostility floating about- is this just about the pro-Hitchens vs the anti Hitchens factions, or is there something else? I tend to ignore the Hitchens bashers that I meet in life, as they tend to be apologists for militant Islam, America-haters and and 9/11 truther nutcases. Ever try debating a 9/11 truther? Those loons leave logic and reason at the door. One reason I abandoned the far left to be a centrist is because 9/11 truther moonbattery infests countless liberal blogs (democratic Underground, Huffington post, etc), or they just claim we deserved the 9/11 and july 7 attacks.

Nice bluff, but just give me the second derivative of a parabola in plain English. It's not all that complicated.

FGFM said...

Tarn, how does it feel to be a Masshole?

Mark G said...

"Mark, why would I, with all this talent?"

You're right: your talent is much more effectively applied trolling obscure websites as opposed to educating young Iraqis and straightening out AUI-S. I'm sure they'd hire you as their recruiter, though. I can send you some emails.

Tarn,

The hostility, as usual, was initiated by L our Louie or whatever he calls himself. He spends an unhealthy amount of time attacking those of us who write for CHW. I don't recall him actually defending Hitchens - he just attacks us - but I assume he's pro-Hitch.

L said...

Here's the breakdown:

CHW is primarily run by Greywolf - a self-confessed truther and conspiracy nut (and big Rense fan), and, not quite as self-confessedly, an "anti-anti-anti-Semite", as the formulation goes. He says things such as Jack Straw speaks with forked-tongue and should be taken as a liar and Zionist shill until proven otherwise because he has part Jewish heritage and potential Israel connections and blah NWO blah Zionist blah Neocon blah blah blah....the usual sordid horseshit.

FGFM and Mark G, the hangers-on, are just obnoxious and thick associates, respectively (though there is some significant overlap) who more have psychological or personal grievances against Hitch, though they let all the truther and antisemitic stuff easily and unmolestedly slide as long as the mouthpiece is sufficiently anti-Hitchens for their tastes. FGFM just flings shit about like a lesser-ape without ever troubling himself with attempting a cogent thought; Mark, on the other hand, does, which, indeed, is often equally shitty.

A horrible bunch, really. And it's not hostility so much as bemusement grading into contempt.

I'm not quite sure you realise quite what a sordid shithole HitchensWatch actually is.

As a former co-"troll" choicely put it (who, incidentally, was banned for being really rather, and much, funnier than they could manage):

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=christopherhitchenswatch

Also, I don't like being called a kike. That does tend to wrankle.

That being said, I think Hitchens is invariably entertaining, witty, and erudite, even when he's very wrong. And I look forward to a future as a constructive and entertaining poster.

Yours sincerely,
Mr. Internet Scientistein.

FGFM said...

Louie, I don't see why anyone would think that you're obsessed with us.

L said...

FGFM said...

Tell me the solution in plain English, fraud. I know you can't do it, but yet it's so simple. Hitchens always does seem to attract dilettantes!

Mark G said...

Greywolf is indeed the de facto leader of CHW. And I'm proud of it. First of all, he's one of the nicest guys on the Internet. A perfect antidote to nasty pricks like L. GW is also, in my opinion, wittier and certainly funnier than, yes, Hitch. Third, Grey thoroughly and persuasively defends his controversial views. And even when you don't agree with him, you have to admire his writing style which is wit minus the self-seriousness. As for the charges of anti-Semitism, I call bullshit. I've read all the exchanges, and I just don't see it.

Mark, Sir - Dear Dim -, it's bloody raining pennies.

Ron Santo said...

Mark,

If someone "thoroughly and persusaively defends his controversial views" ala this Greywolf character (these views, I take it to mean, and generously, are 1) that the only possible chain of events that could not have brought down the twin towers and damaged the Pentagon on 9-11-2001 is the generally accepted explanation that a score of highly trained and motivated young Arab jihadists, w/ logistical and tactical support from a resourceful network of other Arab and Passhto jihadists, were responsible, and 2) that the geo-political influence of a particular group of religious believers is disproportinate and dangerous to humankind), how can you disgree with him? You allow for the possibilty, but that must be nonsense. A thorough and persuasive defense of a position simply must carry the argument, as any dialectician knows. Only corruption and/ or irrationality allows for disagreement with a thorough and persuasive argument. This Greywolf must be less thorough and persuasive than you say. Or, to the extent you disagree with him on a given issue, you must be corrupt and/or irrational. Which is it?

L said...

He's a fucking idiot. He's Dim.

FGFM said...

Mark G said...

Ron,

Naturally, I don't think I'm either irrational or corrupt. However, I don't feel like getting into a debate over the issues you bring up at the moment. I encourage you to read Greywolf yourself as he speaks for himself much better than I ever could. I tend to side with Greywolf's allegedly wacky views, but the truth is, I'm 'agnostic' on the 9-11 question: I don't believe in the conventional narrative which you have outlined, but I don't deny the possibility that it is indeed the case. I am still open-minded on the 'who was actually behind it' debate and am content to absorb ongoing discussion, debate and information as it comes in. More than anything else, I abhor the attempt to smear anyone who would dare question the official narrative. After all, if there's nothing to the conspiracy theories, then why the hell should they bother anyone?

Mark G said...

(To ***)

The wondrous moment of our meeting...
I well remember you appear
Before me like a vision fleeting,
A beauty's angel pure and clear.

In hopeless ennui surrounding
The worldly bustle, to my ear
For long your tender voice kept sounding,
For long in dreams came features dear.

Time passed. Unruly storms confounded
Old dreams, and I >from year to year
Forgot how tender you had sounded,
Your heavenly features once so dear.

My backwoods days dragged slow and quiet --
Dull fence around, dark vault above --
Devoid of God and uninspired,
Devoid of tears, of fire, of love.

Sleep from my soul began retreating,
And here you once again appear
Before me like a vision fleeting,
A beauty's angel pure and clear.

In ecstasy the heart is beating,
Old joys for it anew revive;
Inspired and God-filled, it is greeting
The fire, and tears, and love alive.

Heywood Jeblome said...

A Clockwork Orange was written in English.

I KNOW!

It contains English versions of Russian words.

You mean "English words"?

L said...

It starts like this, Heywood Jeblome. Someone was detailing to Mark why anarchism won't work, his response was:

""Arson"

No cause for this since there's no insurance.

"Bribery. Burglary."

No cause for this since money no longer matters.

"Child Pornography"

Is it a crime for children to have sex? In my opinion, children should start having sex as soon as they're able to - puberty.

"Computer Crime"

Now that's a real doozy. What could they possibly mean by this? Jacking off to porn? Swiping someone's laptop at a Starbucks? What does this mean, JQ?"

And then, it gets even better (all faithful quotes from Mark):

"Child pornography literally means children having sex. Usually between the ages of 12 and 17. Do you have a problem with that?

Child abuse is when an adult physically hurts a child.

Do you see the difference now?"

And then:

"Well, I always thought 'child pornography' was defined as sexual acts committed between boys and girls, aged 12 to 17. But apparently, the term pornography (which comes from prostitution) now suggests a public display of sex acts. No, I don't believe teen sex should be displayed publicly."

And:

"You wouldn't ever rape a baby, JQ, nor would (or has) anyone, because it offers absolutely zero satisfaction to the aggressor.

Now, if you're talking about a father raping his daughter, then we're getting more serious, but there's practically nothing the police can do now to prevent this from happening anyway. We would have to rely on family members and neighbors to intervene. Like in the old days."

And on and on and on - he's a fucking and utter and total moron.

The full glorious detail of his ignorance is available here:

http://js-kit.com/api/static/pop_comments?ref=http%3A%2F%2Fchristopherhitchenswatch.blogspot.com%2F2009_07_01_archive.html&title=Hitchens%20Watch%3A%20July%202009&path=%2F8272529065407834948&standalone=no&scoring=yes&backwards=no&sort=date&thread=yes&permalink=http%3A%2F%2Fjs-kit.com%2Fapi%2Fstatic%2Fpop_comments%3Fref%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fchristopherhitchenswatch.blogspot.com%252F2009_07_01_archive.html%26path%3D%252F8272529065407834948&skin=echo&smiles=no&editable=yes&thread-title=Echo&popup-title=Echo&page-title=Hitchens%20Watch%3A%20July%202009

Author Christopher Hitchens has canceled a talk he planned to give at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at Kepler's bookstore in Menlo Park, Kepler's has announced.

"Due to a personal matter, Mr. Hitchens is unable to be in the Bay Area at this time," Kepler's said in an e-mail.

Kepler's said it hopes to reschedule the talk for later this summer.

Mr. Hitchens was to talk about his new memoir, "Hitch-22: Some Confessions and Contradictions."

Now, since it's quite obvious that CH is having some pretty severe health problems, could I request that the CHW people just go back to wherever they came from, so that those of us who admire him don't have to deal with all the pointless self-absorbed psychotic spew? Indeed.

You are ridiculous.

I reject that characterization.

Now, go away.

No.

Will someone please tell us what the fuck is going on with Hitchens?

Mark, you ought to give him a call.

Tom,
Why do you allow such nonsense to go on here? Surely you could delete the petty bickering and profanity-laced comments without being "undemocratic." This was originally a discussion about Hitchens's mysterious cancellations and the rumors concerning his health. I'm surprised that a major newspaper or wire service hasn't looked into the matter and done a story on it yet.
